An Introduction to Instagram’s Street Style Stars

By Harley Frechette

Once upon a time, I was obsessed with fashion magazines, particularly British publications. In elementary school, and well into middle school, I would make my parents pinky promise that, if they were to see a magazine featuring Kate Middleton on their way home from work, they would (pretty please with a cherry on top) bring me home a copy.

As I read an insane collection of Kate Middleton magazines back to back, I discovered a deep love for fashion. I was introduced to an entire new language, filled with beautiful women dressed in exquisite outfits. I cut out the outfits I loved the most and taped a collage of them to the walls of my bedroom. I not only adored the clothing, but I was obsessed with the character, fun and  daring each look evoked.

Now, well into my college years, I am still finding inspiration from all over and saving the outfits I adore to a (now digital) collection. But this time around, the looks I save are accessible, streetwear-friendly, generated constantly and often come from relatable men and women.

I adore the casual, sophisticated and personal feel of all these Instagram accounts and am grateful for the endless supply of outfit ideas they provide. I have put together my seven “go-to” Instagram accounts for outfit inspiration with the hopes that they will inspire you to dive into your closet and pull together an outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable, or even switches up your norm.

@matildadjerf

I have followed Matilda Djerf for a long time. Scrolling through her Instagram is like stepping outside for a breath of fresh air. The calming images of her peaceful, happy life with her family, dog, and boyfriend are always a comforting scene on my phone. Djerf’s style is simple and sophisticated, filled with pastels and cable-knit sweaters. Though her life seems undoubtedly idealist, Djerf makes a point of opening up to share her more difficult moments with her followers. Along with photos of the pastries she makes with her dad, she discusses the difficulties of recovering from an eating disorder and other everyday hardships. I always look forward to Djerf’s posts, not only because her fashion sense is killer, but because her bright and bubbly personality shines through.

@hoskelsa

I have to admit – I am quite new to following Elsa Hosk on Instagram but recently someone suggested I follow her and this recommendation did not disappoint. The Victoria’s Secret Angel lives in New York with her boyfriend and is constantly killing the street-style game. Hosk embodies the perfect blend of mountain boho and city chic. Her daily outfit posts showcasing leather, knitwear, and everything in between always inspire me to recreate the look the following day.

Hanna.jpg

@hannamw

To be completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what Hanna Mw’s story is…but I want to know it. Hanna is a stylist who is constantly on the move in insane, to die for outfits. After following her around the world for a few weeks, you simply cannot help but want to be friends with her. She takes over the top pieces – dressed with extreme poof and monochromatic red ensembles – and makes work so effortlessly in her normal day-to-day. In addition to supplying her followers with photos of her amazing outfits, Hanna posts beautiful photos of her friends, travels and footage of her work as a stylist – and each photo is better than the last.

Jen.jpg

@endlesslyloveclub

Endlessly Love Club is the moody glam we all are striving for this fall. Her photos are dark, simple and gorgeous. Jen models exquisite minimalist pieces in a sexy, moody way. To anyone who gravitates to the more minimalist side of fashion – this account is for you. Her outfits prove that simple does not have to be boring and that often a beautiful piece accompanied by simple accessories and undone hair is all that is needed for a perfect outfit.

maeve.jpg

@stylememaeve

I wasn’t quite sure who to tag for this one so I will have to settle on the stylist who makes it all happen – Maeve Reilly. Reilly is probably most well known for her work as stylist of the streetwear queen, Hailey Bieber. Reilly is known for her sporty-chic, sweatpants turned dinner wear vibe and Bieber is the perfect model. Honestly, I blame this duo for making me think sweats to class is okay. Reilly’s daring and adventurous style creates incredible outfits that are fun, bold and just plain old cool.

lirisaw.jpg

@lirisaw

Iris Law is the kind of girl whose energy you just can’t help but love. She is carefree, genuine, and fun, and all these character traits are evident in her outfits. She is always experimenting with nail art and crazy colors. Equally fashionable is her boyfriend, Jyrrel Roberts, and as they globetrot the world sharing photos of their food and beautiful scenery, they make sure their fashion game is always on point.

ana.jpg

@anaasaber

Anaa Saber wears all of the things I wish I could pull off on a normal day but only attempt to once in a blue moon. She brings sexy to daywear and slays the sporty-spice mentality. The girl knows how to put together the sneakers and jeans look as well as the cocktail dress and heels look. The thing with Saber, is whatever the outfit may be, there is always something a bit daring involved. Whether it is a cutout pattern in jeans or a colorful sweater vest, boring or basic do not exist in Anaa Saber’s closet.

In the past few months, these accounts have given me inspiration from round the world, when travel is limited. The beauty of these accounts is that the looks aren’t directly off of the runway or based solely on a statement designer piece. Instead, they are adaptable and replicable and shared by relatable men and women.

I have always found it refreshing to witness the personality and creativity people share through their outfit choices. And thanks to Instagram, we are able to experience and be inspired by the stylistic nature of those around us, near or far.
