Summer to Fall Beauty Routine Revamp

By Taylor Driscoll

Give summer a hug goodbye and welcome in fall! Summer may bring in the hot weather and cute bikinis, but it can leave you with drier skin (and maybe even a sunburn or two). Your routine is based on summer trends and warm weather, but what do you when summertime says au revoir?

Change your daily skincare routine:

In the summer, oil-free and water based moisturizers are essential to keeping your skin looking fresh and hydrated without feeling heavy and oily. With all the pool and beach days, when your skin starts drying up due to the chlorine and salt water, it is essential to keep in hydration.

In the fall, heavier moisturizers will be better for the colder and drier days. Since the skin will be a little drier due to the changing temperature, it won’t hurt to add in extra moisture to make up for this.

Even though the sun’s rays are not going to be as strong in the fall, don’t ditch the sunscreen! You won’t have to apply it as frequently, but it is still a skincare necessity. If you switch back to full-coverage foundation in the fall, there are many brands that sell products containing varying levels of SPF. If you do not wear foundation, simply wear a moisturizer with SPF built in.

When it comes to exfoliation, you should do this, at the most, two times a week. Exfoliation is a great way to get rid of unwanted dead skin and make your face and body feel softer, but excessive exfoliation can cause irritation and dryness, especially in chilly fall weather.

Switch out your palettes:

Summer sheds light on the brights. Neon hues and other bright colors compliment the long, sunny days. Since fall brings us cooler months, cool and darker-toned colors fit perfectly. Colors like olive, burgundy and burnt orange compliment the fall weather well. Nude colors are beautiful in any season, but for fall, you want to bring out the darker and cool-toned palettes and lipsticks.

The same can also be said for your highlights—instead of going with blinding highlighter to catch the summer rays, try something more subtle for a lighter glow to your face.

For those who like switching up their hair color, fall brings about a different wave of trends as well—AKA no more of the same bright highlights and coloring. Similarly to makeup, autumn hair color trends seem to stay on the darker side, featuring a variety of maroons and dark browns.

Monochrome Makeup:

In the fall, makeup tends to dim down a little. Newly released color palettes become filled with more neutral, cool and darker colors. With these, you can create a look using the same shades of one single color. You can create a bold smokey eye with a different shades of brown and pair it with the same color on the lips and have a night-out look. You can keep it simple with light nude colors on both the lid and lips and go to class or just hang out with friends.
