Spooky Pieces to Pay Homage to October

by Corinne Mosher

We are officially in the month of spook! If you’re anything like me, October is the time of year that you wait for with wide eyes and an increasing appetite for apple cider donuts. It would take a lot of convincing to tell me that there is a better month in the year, not just because I’m an October baby, but also because the spirit of Halloween looms in the air. As a lover of fashion, theatrics and junk food, the fact that there is a whole holiday dedicated to dressing up wildly and eating mounds of candy is what gets me through the year.

You may ask what Halloween does for day-to-day October fashion, and the answer is that it allows for fun experimentation and risk-taking with statement pieces. With a little help from me, you can take your normal fall attire to the dark side.

1. The easiest place to start with adding some creep into your ensemble is some killer accessories.

Get your goth on by adding a fun choker to your look. On-trend and Claire’s cheap? Check.

Have fun with your earrings while keeping the rest of your look understated and chic. Betsey Johnson has an amazing selection of creepy jewelry, including these gems.

Adding a fun patch like this one from Nasty Gal won’t alter your signature style, but it will surely add a little touch of Halloween playfulness.

2. Shoes! Whether you’re looking to up your spooktastic shoe game at the club or on the streets, these kicks are to die for.

These Charlotte Olympia heels will be show stoppers at any classy October event, and who says spider webs are only cool in the fall?

As a Dr. Martens lover, I can attest to the fact that these boots are both practical and badass. This particular style will let the world know just how dead you are on the inside.

3. Ghostly graphic tees are another chilling way to have some fun in fashion this month.

This Hot Topic tee is super affordable and also references American Horror Story (the show, not this upcoming election).

Black cats make me think of the cinematic masterpiece Hocus Pocus, meaning now is the time to pounce on wearing this Marc Jacobs tee in collaboration with Taboo.

4. Last but not least, a statement bag can always transform an ordinary outfit into a seasonally themed ensemble.

While this Kate Spade bag doesn’t scream bloody murder, it unmasks the truth that Halloween doesn’t just have to coincide with horror.

Well, there you have it: you don’t have to wait until October 31 to start celebrating Halloween. The most important part of injecting some Halloween flair into your pre-Halloween style and not looking like you’re wearing a costume is to own it. Confidence is key to rocking anything from a simple spider ring to a full vampy outfit, fellow fashionistas. So have fun and don’t be afraid to take some risks. Now go and get your spook on!
