Cute & Practical Snow Boots

Written by Julia Wong

Parting with Summer and Fall’s cute shoes is always one of the hardest parts of Winter. The snow comes out and the sandals and flats get put away. There are always the brave souls who try to wear their Vans and Birks through the slush, but this often results in the heartbreaking destruction of a shoe we once loved. Moving on is so hard because we often think of snow boots as clunky atrocities that we wouldn’t want to be caught dead in, no matter how awful the weather. But the good news is, there are so many practical boots out there that also deliver the style we want. Below are some options that will prove it’s possible to keep your feet warm all winter while still looking cute.

Sorel is one of my favorite boot brands. I’m from super snowy Colorado, and year after year these boots prove they are one of the best things I own. They can be taken from a winter walk right into class because they are so versatile. One of their best features is that they have great traction, so you don’t have to worry about slipping on ice. Sorel offers tons of different styles and stylish neutral colors.

Another great brand to look for winter boots is Timberland. They’re known for their classic sand colored work boots, but they also provide a ton of other unique options. All their styles can easily be paired with a cute pair of warm socks, and can be dressed up or down. They’re also super durable and will make it through many seasons.

Uggs have been a staple of any trendy girl’s closet since the early 2000s, but the once simple boot brand has evolved. They now offer dozens of styles that are much more sophisticated than their basic short boot. The majority of their shoes are both fur lined and waterproof, providing warmth and durability.

Chelsea boots have made quite the rise in fashion recently. They’re sleek, easy to slip on and go with everything, but my one complaint about them is that most pairs don’t have insulation. Luckily someone was smart enough to make a fur lined version of the boot, though, so they now provide warmth in addition to being super cute.

If you’re into more of a combat style boot then Kodiak is a brand you should definitely check out. All of their styles are waterproof and have great traction. They offer lots of dark neutral shades that can be paired with anything.

Teva offers a slightly cheaper version of a winter combat boot that is still waterproof and super cute. I’ve never bought a pair of Teva boots but my dad still has a pair of Teva sandals from the 80s, so I’m sure their boots last forever too.

Finally, there is the Bean Boot. I don’t think it’s possible to write about boots in Boston without mentioning this shoe. A classroom on Northeastern’s campus is likely to hold at least 10 pairs on a snowy day, but it’s understandable why people love the boot so much. L.L. Bean provides many different versions of the boot, so it’s still possible to find something different than everyone else while still hopping on the trend.
