The Final Farewell of Skinny Jeans — and the Comeback of All Other Bottoms

In the depths of quarantine, we existed solely in sweatpants and readily overlooked the “real” clothes that remained untouched for months in our closets. Zoom classes and virtual conference calls guaranteed that we lived in pajama bottoms 24/7, and wearing anything other than that was labeled as an absurdity. The concept of fashion as we once knew it vanished in a matter of weeks.
As we started venturing out again, we began to rewear the clothes that once made routine appearances in the outside world. Though this time around, our past go-to pieces had to face a few simple but loaded questions: Is it comfortable? Is it so comfortable that I won’t want to immediately change into sweats when I get home? Can I eat comfortably in it? Will I chafe in it? Does it add to my everyday wardrobe? Am I happy while wearing it? Many of us decided to boot the clothing that lacked a perfect score on this assessment.
During this wary transition to less casual attire, I’m sure we all got rid of some outdated shirts, unflattering dresses, and blister-inducing shoes. However, I am confident that the ultimate loser of our closet clearouts was a foe to all — the skinny jean.
This overdue farewell to the less comfortable version of leggings is a win for the entire fashion community, as well as for our own comfort. Skinny jeans are torturous to put on, agonizing to walk in, and not complementary to most other attire — though I’ll make an exception for knee-high boots. Not to mention, they are far from flattering on most body types.
So, what has replaced our long-time denim foe? There is a variety of fun, comfy, and far more stylish options that may be here to stay. Want to show off a new pair of sneakers? A pair of boyfriend jeans are the perfect match. Need the perfect pants to compliment your sandals and linen tee? Look no further than classic mom jeans or cropped straight-leg denim. And accomplish the “legs for days” look by styling yourself in high-waisted wide-leg jeans or roller girl-inspired flares, paired with heels.
If you were waiting for a sign to finally let go of the pile of skinny jeans in your closet, this is it. But, if skinny jeans are your thing, listen to your fashion instincts and always go for what makes you feel the most confident!
